A powerful selective inhibitor of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). It is most famous for treating erectile dysfunction by enhancing the effect of nitric oxide to relax smooth muscles, allowing increased blood flow to the corpus cavernosum. It is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension by causing vasodilation in the lungs.
